St. Francis was born in Assisi, Italy in 1181, to a wealthy family. He was spoiled as a child and was loved by all he met. As a young man, however, he began to desire power and fame. He wanted to fight in the 4th Crusade, but while on his way he heard God speak to him telling him he was doing the wrong thing. He slowly began to change his life and desired an extreme poverty. He gave away all he had and began to live a simple life. People began to be attracted to his way of life, and his brotherhood became known as the Francisan Order. While praying for holiness, St. Francis received Christ's wounds in the stigmata.
