THE SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

"Building Together Our Family of Faith"

In the Book of Genesis and the Gospel of Luke of today's Mass we hear of the importance of trusting God our Father in our prayer.  Daily prayer is an essential part to our daily life, as breathing is for the body.  Prayer is both a listening and speaking to the Lord.  The more we grow in our prayer life, the more we desire the union of our will with God's will.  How does one know if one is growing in one's prayer?  One sign is one sees the growth of charity towards one's neighbor outside the time you have given to prayer, and one is more aware of being in the presence of God.  May we ask the Holy Spirit to help us to learn more and more each day how to truly pray and remain in the presence of Christ.

FROM THE PASTOR'S DESK: I want to first thank all of you for your kindness that you have shown me over the last week.  I pray that I may effectively serve you and be the instrument Our Lord wants me to be.  There are so many wonderful people and works occurring in the parish, and I hope to help build on these great things. The work of proclaiming the kingdom of God is such an extraordinary task God has entrusted to us as His children. I hope I may provide the many means God has given to us to carry out this work.  One basic means  I plan on using is this weekly column to touch on some of aspects of our faith and how we can grow in them (fundamental doctrines of our faith, the sacramental life, prayer, the virtues, family, morality, etc.).  Though I have many topics I can and will write on, I hope these brief columns will help with questions you may be pondering or wrestling with in your minds and hearts.  Please feel free to send me an email if you have any topics you would like me to write on.  Obviously you can email me as well if you have any questions you may have regarding the faith.

PLEASE KEEP IN YOUR PRAYERS THIS WEEKEND a number of our young people who are attending the STEUBENVILLE EAST RETREAT this weekend at URI in Kingston, RI., accompanied by some of our adults.  It is a great experience and we hope many more young people will take the chance to go in the future.

TV MASS WITH FR. JEFF: Fr. Jeff Cabral will be celebrating a taped TV Mass this coming Saturday, July 31st at 11:00 am at the chapel of Bishop Stang High School in North Dartmouth.  The Mass will air on Sunday, August 15th on Channel 6.  All are invited to join him in celebrating this Mass.  A caravan of cars will be leaving from the church parking lot at approximately 10:15 am.  For further information, contact Fr. Jeff at the rectory.

HOLY FAMILY VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL for our young children ages 3 through 4th GRADE are welcome to participate.   The dates are Aug. 2 -6th from 9 a.m. - Noon each day.  This year's theme is "RAINFOREST".  Tuition: One child ($10.00), Two children ($8.00 each) $16.00; Three children ($6.00 each) $18.00; Four or more children ($6.00 each) People of all ages (grade 5 & up, teens, young adults, middle age, elders) are invited to help out. PARISH TRIP TO WATER COUNTRY will be held on FRIDAY, AUGUST 13TH. The bus will leave the Church parking lot at 9:00 a.m. and will return about 7:00 p.m.  The cost will be $25.00 per person plus the cost of the bus. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION BOOKS: Parents/Guardians of students who were in Grades 3 - 9 this past year are reminded that your child's religious education book needs to be returned to us.  If you haven't done so yet, would you please bring the book(s) to the Faith Formation Office at the Parish Center (please do not leave at the Rectory).  Invoices for those books not returned will be mailed to parents in a couple of weeks.  We thank you for your cooperation. REGISTRATION FOR RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CLASSES: Any family who registered in our parish over the last few months and has a child(ren) entering Grades 1 - 9 this fall, is asked to contact Karen at the Faith Formation Office so we can have you on the list of families who will be receiving registration forms. THE 51ST ANNUAL TAUNTON AREA CYO GOLF TOURNAMENT  will take place on Monday, Aug. 2, starting at 8:00 a.m. sharp at the John F. Parker Golf Course in Taunton.  The tourney will feature an 18 hole medal play and the entry fee is $12.00 per participant.  Golfers will be divided into the following divisions: Seniors (born on or after July 1, 1990); Juniors (born on or after July 1, 1993); and Cadets (born on or after July 1, 1996)

Seniors must report to the Clubhouse no later than 7:30 a.m. that day.  Juniors must report to the Clubhouse  no later than 8:00 a.m. that day and Cadets must report to the Clubhouse no later than 8:15 a.m. that day.  Only golfers from TAUNTON, BERKLEY, EASTON, RAYNHAM AND DIGHTON are eligible for this local tournament.

THE DIOCESAN HEALTH FACILITIES 2ND ANNUAL GOLF CLASSIC will be held August 30th at LeBaron Hills Country Club, Lakeville. CONGRATULATIONS to the families of Dillon Foley and Anthony Pires for the baptisms of these  children.  Please pray for them since they, last Sunday, received  the life of grace and faith, were washed of original sin, and have been conformed to Jesus Christ.  Pray that their families may be the instruments Our Lord desires them to be, that their homes may image the home of Nazareth and may be an environment where the faith is fostered joyfully.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS TO BE A GODPARENT FOR BAPTISM OR CONFIRMATION?  You must be a confirmed Catholic, at least 16 years old, registered in a parish and practicing your Faith by weekly participation at Mass.  If you are married your marriage must be recognized as valid by the Church.  See Fr. Kevin if you have any questions.

The proceeds benefit the most disadvantaged: victims of war, oppression, and disasters.  Through your generosity, with Pope Benedict, we can cast the love of Christ upon the world.
